Lynn Leads The Way
The Dialogues of Learning Offer Both Innovation and
Real-life Experience

At the start of Lynn Universiy’s fall 2008 semester, the campus curriculum said farewell to College Algebra and English 101, but hello to an innovative new curriculum.
Both the Office of Academic Affairs and Lynn faculty spearheaded the new curriculum, which took two years to complete. Vice President for Academic Affairs, Cynthia Patterson said the new core (titled the “Dialogues of Learning”) was “designed to match our academic core with the university’s mission to be one of the most innovative, individualized and international small universities in the country.”
Instead of Algebra, students will enroll in Introduction to Quantitative Reasoning, which involves everyday mathematics. A seminar course based on writing and debating will replace English 101. The elements of the seminar course will focus on Self and Society, Belief and Reason and Justice and Civic Life. Finally, instead of Science, students will take Introduction to Scientific Literacy. This course will investigate mysteries, methods, discoveries and theories of the scientific world.
Eva Domato, freshman, is currently enrolled in American Pop Culture.
“I like the new curriculum,” said Domato. “I think it will help with real life experiences.”
Professor Steve Aiello currently teaches a dialogue course on the theme of Self and Society, The Emerging Self in the Sixties.
“I think it will challenge students to think critically and creatively and will offer them a wide range of topics and choices as compared to a traditional core curriculum,” he said.
It is not only professors and freshman that enjoy the new curriculum.
“I think that by offering these classes to students they will be able to relate more to real-life situations,” said Devin Porter, senior. “Classes such as Introduction to Qualitative Reasoning can help students with their personal finances.”

LYNN’S LIVING LA VIDA BOCA
Exploring the Many Activities the Lynn Community Has to Offer

Students have been in class for a month now, and are ready to venture off campus and explore the area. No matter what interests you, Boca Raton has something to offer.
For Selby Moore, junior, her favorite area is Mizner Park.
“I love Sloan’s,” Moore says about the well-known ice cream shop, which features a variety of homemade ice cream and a glass front bathroom that crystallizes when locked. Other attractions in Mizner Park include high end shopping, fine dinning and outdoor concerts ranging from Kelly Clarkson, Fergie and Dashboard Confessional.
Even more entertainment can be found within a mile radius of Lynn University. Rob Brenner, sophomore, enjoys catching the occasional movie at Muvico.
“It’s better than at home, I’d have to drive at least fifteen minutes to get to the good movie theater,” said the Pennsylvania native.
Located next to the movie theater, Boomer’s offers a great arcade, mini gulf, bumper boats, go-carts and laser tag.
“It’s the adult version of Chucky Cheese,” said Scott Goldberg, senior.
Also within a mile from school sits Boca Town Center Mall, which features shops ranging from moderate priced stores all the way up to designer brands.
After doing some retail therapy to relieve the classroom stress, you can always catch a few rays at one of the many local beaches.

Going Greek? They Are!
Greek Brothers and Sisters United for an Annual Gathering

Greek life has started the semester off with a bang and after all the excitement of recruitment the Greek Pride Day luncheon was another big hit. The wet weather could not spoil the celebrations as people ate, talked and took pictures with their new brothers and sisters.
“It is amazing,” said Rhandi Thame, a senior and new member of Phi Mu. “I love being here and spending time with all my new friends.”
Greek life means a lot of things to many different people. Members of Zeta Beta Tau and Sigma Sigma Sigma were happy to share what Greek Life means to them.
“For me, it is the whole Greek community coming together and supporting each other,” said Elena Hoyler, senior and Tri Sigma President. “I am happy to see all the new members here today.”
“I like to think of it as a bond between brothers that share common values with all the organizations coming together to make life on campus one of the best college experiences,” said Joey McNamara, ZBT Recruitment Chair.
The event, organized by Annie Weaver, Coordinator of Student Involvement, brought all members of Greek life together. “I hope by next semester to have our Greek council in place,” said Weaver. “Once we have the council they can plan the event themselves and make it even better.”
Greek Life has about 140 members here at Lynn and by spring semester the Greek community hopes to welcome many more into the family.

A NEW FIGHTING KNIGHT
Men’s Basketball Team Welcomes Assistant Coach Crislip

During the summer, Men’s Basketball Head Coach Scott McMillin named Bryan Crislip the newest assistant coach in order to complete his staff for the 2008-2009 season. Crislip, a native of Parkersburg, West Virginia, played college basketball at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) in Fort Myers. Here, Crislip reached the NCAA Division II tournament and a number five ranking in the Division II national polls.
Prior to joining the Lynn staff, Crislip spent one year as a graduate assistant for the FGCU Women’s Basketball Team, then a year as a regular assistant, where his team reached the Division II National Championship Game. Finally, he spent one year as the Head Coach at Barron Collier High School, where he went 22-5. Crislip was also in Holland playing professional basketball for two-years.
“The first quality I saw in Bryan was that I knew he was a tough competitor as a player, and that is what I look for first,” Coach McMillin said. “He was an extremely hard worker, and turned himself into a very good player, and his dedication paid off as he played pro ball in Europe for two years.”
Crislip’s responsibilities will include academics, recruiting, working with the offense, the guards specifically, and film exchange. “Bryan will also be great with our guard play, as he was a point guard himself,” McMillin added. “I always love having assistant coaches that were former successful players, and that was a huge positive in hiring him.” Senior team captain Luke Postorino added, “It’s great to work with a young coach that has played the same position as me and against the same completion at a Division II school in the state of Florida.”
“Lynn’s great program and the respect I have for Coach McMillin with how well he has put the program on the Division II map really attracted me to Lynn,” Crislip said. “I love the atmosphere and excitement for the program and the weather. It reminds me of FGCU.”
In his spare time, Crislip is a sitcom fanatic and enjoys playing cards and golf.
