In affiliation with the Make-A-Wish foundation, the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) recently presented Kayla Farese, 10, with a trip to Disney World.
The representatives of SAAC raised thousands of dollars for Farese. The Boca Raton resident was born without a pulmonary artery in her heart. She underwent surgery as a new born to replace the artery and at the beginning of August, the artery was replaced again. Even with these difficulties, Farese is always full of life and energy.
“Right after the surgery it was a very scary time,” said Janice Farese, Kayla’s mother. “The doctor told us to give her three-weeks and we then should notice a difference in her energy, and he was right. She is starting to act like herself again finally.”
Kayla was granted her longtime wish of visiting Disney World, and will be enjoying the trip with her family over the New Year holiday.
“She had the decision to choose between the snow or Disney World for her wish,” Farese added. “Without any thought at all she blurted out Mickey Mouse, and that was the end of it. Her decision was made.”
SAAC has really enjoyed working with Make-A-Wish and looks forward to granting more wishes in the future. |

Relay For Life 2009 kicked off this year with a rally in the Knights Court recently. The rally gained committee members, raised awareness for the cause and helped teams register for the event.
Relay For Life Advisor, Annie Weaver, described why she participates in the event.
“I found out that my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Relay helped me to deal with the news since she was in Michigan and I was at school in Nebraska. I relay to honor her, and to bring awareness and hope to others.”
Cancer survivor Alexandra Petrozzo, sophomore, shared her personal story of how cancer has affected her life. Petrozzo went on to explain how she suffered from a benign brain tumor when she was in eighth grade. She also talked about the many challenges she has overcome to get to where she is today. Petrozzo discussed, in great detail, her fight with the disease and her six-month absence from school. Petrozzo was thrilled to graduate with her class later that year.
This year’s Relay For Life will turn Lynn University into the happiest place on earth. Disney films and Relay For Life have teamed up to represent the hopes and dreams of the young and old alike. The 2009 Relay For Life Committee was proud to announce Disney as this year’s theme.

“My Best Friends Girl” is a romantic comedy starring Dane Cook (Tank), Jason Biggs (Dustin) and Kate Hudson (Alexis) that promises to deliver laughs. Tank is hired by men to take their ex-girlfriends on the worst dates in hope that the women will return to their ex-boyfriends. Dustin hires Tank for that very reason, to win back his ex-girlfriend, Alexis. Tank attempts everything he can to be rude and insulting to Alexis but it only makes her want him more. He is faced with a moral dilemma when he falls in love with her as well.
This movie will make you laugh, especially when Alec Baldwin makes a cameo appearance as Tank’s father. “This movie was unexpectedly funny,” said Meagan Fitzgerald, senior. “I can not believe some of the annoying things Tank does on his dates, as well as what Tank’s father cries out loud.”
iPulse Movie Critic, Rachael Evans recommends this film and therefore rates “My Best Friend’s Girl” with a noteworthy three-and-a-half stars.

Although gladiator sandals are notoriously known for being worn by Maximus in ancient Rome, they have once again come back in style to defeat the fashion police. They have been popular with spring fashion for some time and have landed a spot in the trend of the week.
Gladiator sandals have been seen on many celebrities such as Rihanna, Nicky Hilton and Rachel Bilson. “I love my gladiator sandals,” said Danielle Mizrahi, junior. “I can wear them to any occasion.” Although these sandals are a bit daring, you will not regret it after the trendy, exotic look you will achieve while still staying comfortable. There are many colors and styles that gladiator sandals are available in such as black, silver, snakeskin and white.
They also can be found having ranging from one ankle strap, to multiple that usually strap up the leg. “They are definitely one of my new favorite trends,” said Morgan Brown, senior. “They are the perfect touch to a simple outfit.”
Gladiator sandals range in price, but a highly recommended adorable sandal is sold online by Sam Edelman at a low price of $80. They can be worn as a casual look in the day or dress them up with a dress at night. “I wasn’t sure about how I felt about them at first,” said Sophia Zagoreos, junior. “But once I started wearing them I became more comfortable with them.” So, next time you are debating which shoe to wear, definitely think gladiator to get the trendiest, cutest look. |

The year is 1945. Franklin D. Roosevelt has just died. Roosevelt’s vice president has only been in office for 82 days and he is now President of the United States of America.
Understanding what really happen in American history is very important to Lynn University Professor Robert Watson, the american studies coordinator at Lynn University. Harry Truman, the 33rd president, is a no-brainier for Dr. Watson. His latest book, “Israel and the Legacy of Harry S. Truman,” is the third book in a series of five dedicated to President Truman.
It’s “a story about great morals” and “doing the right thing” said Watson.
The book not only tells the story of a man who grew up in a racist family, but illustrates how as president, Truman came to the decision that Israel must be formed as a nation. He befriended many in the Jewish community to resolve issues that needed attention.
For more information, visit Amazon.com to purchase a copy and ask Professor Watson to sign it. with a noteworthy three-and-a-half stars. |

Lynn University recently had another one of its many blood drives. As always, quite a few caring students donated blood to save lives.
Sophomore Jason Shaw, an experienced blood donor who has donated four times, claims that side effects vary depending on one’s height and weight.
“It feels good knowing that I help contribute to saving lives,” said Shaw. “With me having the blood of the universal donor, it would be selfish for me not to. ” |

Samantha Bartley, alum, attended recently an award ceremony at St. Mary’s Hospital. She received an award for creating a logo for the Child Life Institute; a non-profit organization that helps children with cancer cope with confusion and questions.
Child Life Institute is a non-profit organization that offers services for children with cancer, ages 0-18 and their families. Therapists provide counseling to children who undergo medical procedures and surgeries. The learning center, one of the
services provided by the Child Life Institute, educates children who are hospitalized due to pediatric cancer, acute and chronic medical conditions and serious injuries.
Child life specialists prepare children for their medical experiences by playing with puppets, viewing preparatory videos and photos as well as engaging in medical play by utilizing toys or actual hospital equipment.
When it came time to choose a logo for the Child Life Institute the team wanted something that was unique and original.
Barbara Abernathy, the clinical director of the Child Life Institute contacted Lynn Professor, Valeria Fabj, to see if she could utilize some of the creative talent at Lynn. Fabj recommended her student Samantha Bartley for her outstanding artistic abilities.
Prior to Bartley, many logos had been received, however, “they didn’t capture what we wanted,” said Abernathy. “They were much too traditional.”
Upon receiving Bartley’s logo, Abernathy immediately thought, “Oh my, that’s it!” In fact, everyone at the institute fell in love with it.
Bartley volunteered to create the logo pro-bono to support the Child Life Institute and “to send the message that anyone can help in their own way and should,” stated Bartley after receiving her plaque.
The Child Life Institute is always looking for volunteers. The children are always in need of a friend, or someone to keep them company while mom and dad are at the office. If interested in making a new friend, reading books to kids or just lending a helping hand, call Rachel Wood at 561-882-6334. |
