With the academic year underway, students have been quite busy in the newsroom of iPulse with two noteworthy additions. First and foremost, today marks the launch of LynnPulse, a 30-minute live television broadcast.
During the live show, students showcase a plethora of perspectives on issues ranging from the environment and politics to commentaries on university, community and national news. This unique endeavor provides students with the opportunity to participate in a live interactive broadcast feed where news and views occur simultaneously via webcasting.
“I’m so excited to watch the LynnPulse every Friday and I’m happy that it is going to different mediums,” said Kara Henderson, graduate student. If I miss an issue it is great that I can turn on the TV and view it.”
The iPulse is reaching across multiple mediums including daily news feeds and radio segments through an interactive website at, www.lynnuniversity.net/ipulse.
To facilitate the accessibility of the print version of iPulse, five commercial-style news racks have been established. These dispensers are recognizable and aesthetically encompass Lynn’s blue spirit complete with the iPulse logo on the side.
“I read the iPulse because it is written by students,” said Taryn Hamill, graduate student. “I like to know what is going on around campus every day and the iPulse is the best at providing that.”
The news racks are placed in the following locations: ASSAF, Ritter, EMLynn, the third floor of the library and in the Student Center, next to the stairs leading to the Knights Court.
It is clear the iPulse is continuously growing and the newsroom welcomes any and all ideas to enhance the dissemination of information. |

Vice President candidates, Biden and Palin |

The vice presidential debate took place last Thursday, Oct. 2, leaving only a month left until Americans decide who will be the next President of the United States. The race for the White House between McCain and Obama is too close to call and the debate did not stir the pot or bubble over as most viewers and critics suggested.
Many Americans were expecting more from the Delaware veteran, Senator Joe Biden, and the almost two year Governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin. The debate turned into a two-hour war on campaign attack ads on television, one bashing the other with prerecorded statements.
Governor Palin stuck to her parties’ guns and policies, giving a repeat of the Senator McCain’s speeches. Palin also gave many remarks toward her state’s energy freedom and her power over the oil industries. No tears for Palin in this showdown against Biden. At times she was off topic and did not answer questions directly as given by moderator Gwen Ifill of PBS.
Senator Biden did not give the knockout punch performance that most Democrats wanted. Biden used too many numbers in the factional warfare launched between them over the span of the debate. Most Democrats think that Biden won, but for the Republicans it was also a win for them since Palin stood up on the national stage. Nov. 4 is the time to vote, the next few weeks are going to get heated and words are going to fly.

Why have numerous girls been seen wearing scarves all over campus? The weather outside is hot enough and girls have been adding scarves to their outfits, sounds crazy, right?
Although many question their decisions while getting dressed, these items have made the trend of the week. “They are a great trend,” said Morgan Brown, junior. “I think that anybody can wear a scarf and be able to pull it off.” Many celebrities such as Jessica Alba, Rachel Bilson, Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan have been seen wearing scarves in all temperatures.
“I love the new scarf trend,” said Danielle Mizrahi, junior. “It can make a boring outfit look so cute.” Scarves come in many different colors and materials such as cotton, silk, wool, hand embroidered and linen. They can be worn hanging down or tied at the neck in several different ways and can be worn any time of the day. A very well admired scarf is made by Sir Alistair and is known for the beautiful patterns. This scarf is sold at a retail price of $122. Another fashionable scarf is made by Love Quotes. These scarves come in every color of the rainbow and are admired for being so comfortable, made with 100% linen, sold at $88. In addition, Love Quotes donates 10% of the proceeds to international children’s charities.
“There are so many cute colored Love Quotes scarves,” said Courtney Gunther, senior. “I try not to wear mine every day.” If looking for a lower price scarf, Urban Outfitters sells very trendy scarves at affordable prices.
Although scarves are typically known to keep you warm in the winter, they will make any outfit look trendier than ever. The next time you have a simple outfit, add a scarf to accessorize and look fabulous.

The Lynn men’s soccer team is finally back where it belongs ranked as the NCAA Division 2 top team in the nation.
In the last 17 years, Lynn regularly filled the number one spot with former Head Coach Shaun Pendleton leading the way. However, almost a year ago Lynn was knocked from the top spot after a 4-2 defeat against the Tampa Spartans.
Since that day the road to the top has been long and hard. With new Head Coach John Rootes at the helm, Lynn has began this 2008 season with more promise than ever before. The knights are 10-0 and lead the Sunshine State Conference with a 2-0 record.
Lynn teams of the past have been known for their solid defence and lethal scoring offense. This year is no different with the Knights leading the conference in goals for and against. Senior Midfielder/Forward Jean Alexandre has already won SSC Offensive player of the week three times, notching 13 goals and four assists. Alexandre heads the SSC in points and goals having scored more this year than in three previous seasons combined.
For the first time in a few years the Fighting Knights are the only top-25 nationally ranked team to have won every single game. Usually teams such as Fort Lewis (Colo.) and West Florida have matched that record up until the final weeks of the season. The Knights know that every game from now on will be tough, with everyone trying to gun down the number one team.
The Knights return to action away to Florida Tech, (4-7), on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. Listen to the game live by going to www.lynn.edu, click on athletics and live audio.

Special to the iPulse
Recently, alumna and graduate student Samantha Bartley received an award from the Child Life Institute (CLI) for designing their new logo. This week, the institute is asking for donations of candy wrappers for its next non-profit event.
The Child Life Institute is a non-profit organization which provides services to children with cancer and other illnesses.
This year, CLI is hosting a Halloween party for the kids at the Children’s Hospital at St. Mary’s Medical Center. The holidays are often a time of sadness for the children who are isolated in the hospital. Children have to spend the holiday away from their loved ones and can not participate in the festivities.
Barbara Abernathy, CLI’s clinical director explains, “We try to make the hospital as festive as possible during a holiday. If the kids can’t get out during the holiday, we try to bring the holiday to them.”
To celebrate Halloween, the institute is holding a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory themed event. They plan to decorate for the party using candy wrappers and candy bags, and are asking for donations of any of these items.
All are encouraged to donate any candy wrappers or empty candy bags to the iPulse newsroom office located on the third floor of the Library. All wrappers are due no later than Oct. 15. To encourage widespread participation in this charitable event, every ten wrappers donated will qualify to be entered into a drawing for a $25 gift certificate to Starbucks. Please donate and help make Halloween a special event for everyone.
“I think it is a clever idea and something fun to do,” said Grant Stateman, senior. “This is a great way to help children who have to spend Halloween in the hospital.”
If interested in volunteering to decorate the hospital, please contact Rachel Wood of the Child Life Institute at 561-882-6334.
