Rotaract Club Raises Awareness of Children in War Torn Uganda

The Invisible Children’s mission statement is to “improve the quality of life for war-affected children by providing access to quality education, enhanced learning environments and innovative economic opportunities for the community.”
As a show of support for the Invisible Children’s Movement, the members of Lynn’s Rotaract Club gave up their desks in classes for one week to bring attention to the plight of the children in northern Uganda who have been afflicted by the 22-year war. These children do not have desks at school and are lucky if they are able to be in school at all.
On Tuesday, Oct. 7, Rotaract President Vir Philip and Vice President Mike Polan led Professor Anna Krift’s Women and Politics Class to conduct class on the floor.
Philip said, “We sat on the floor to realize that the children in Uganda face these hardships every day.”
Polan added, “All too often, people and regions of the world find themselves in crisis and with no way to reach a lifeline. Rotaract of Lynn University is becoming the extended reach of the people of northern Uganda by connecting them to our Lynn community through education and opportunities to lend our support.”
Students and others passionate about the cause have had the opportunity to realize how fortunate they are to be able to have an education at a university. Some of those who participated in sitting on the floor during classes have also realized that there is no reason for them to be concerned about luxuries such as furniture.
Philip and Polan have said, “After sitting on the floor for a while, it would feel weird to go back to a desk.”
The Rotaract Club is a community service organization affiliated with the International Rotary Club. Rotaract normally participates in Habitat for Humanity, a nature cleanup, Carnations for the Elderly and many more projects and events.
Currently, Rotaract is sponsoring a screening of the Invisible Children’s second documentary, “Go,” as in, “How Far Would You Go for the children in Uganda?” The screening will take place Oct. 20 at 7p.m. in the DeHoernle Lecture Hall.
Polan said, “The screening of Invisible Children’s “Go” is the Rotaract Club’s major international service event for the year, and fittingly we have asked the International Affairs Society for their effort as well.”
Along with the Rotary Club in Boca Raton, Lynn’s Rotaract Club has been raising funds for the cause by selling bracelets for a donation of $20. Each bracelet is handmade from recycled wire and reed and includes a short film about an individual child affected by the war. Rotaract has already raised more than $1,500 that will go to putting children in school. These bracelets offer jobs in northern Uganda and connect the children with the rest of the world.

CELEBRATING CIVIL AWARENESS
National Coming Out Day Commemorates its
20th Anniversary at Lynn

Saturday, Oct. 11 marked the anniversary of National Coming Out Day at Lynn University. Students showed support in a multitude of ways.
National Coming Out Day is an internationally-observed civil awareness day for coming out and discussing issues that pertain to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities.
“I think National Coming Out Day is a good thing to celebrate,” said Scott Goldberg, senior. “I think it allows people to show who they really are.”
Last year, Lynn University celebrated the annual event with a testimonial session. Speakers from the homosexual community discussed their personal experiences with heterosexual family members and friends. Likewise members of the heterosexual community explaining their own experiences.
During National Coming Out Day, participants often wear symbols that signify their support for the homosexual community.
“I think it is excellent and vital to society to support such an important cause,” said Shannon O’Donnell, senior. “It always inspires me when I see individuals voicing their opinions and beliefs.”

For students interested in gaining practical leadership experience Student Development is hosting a Leadership Certification Program.
The program is designed for students to be effective role models and leaders in all areas of their life. Many students on campus have already taken advantage of this excellent opportunity.
Student Government Association President Joey McNamara who became leadership certified said, “The leadership program provided a connection with the real world and being able to adapt your leadership skills after college.”
Students interested in improving these skills will have the opportunity to do so starting today at 3 p.m.
Upcoming events include the following: Level I on Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. in the Christine Room with an Effective Communication Workshop.

STOP! A LIGHTING PROBLEM AHEAD
New Headquarters to Create More Traffic for
Lynn’s Daily Commuters

Military Trail normally expects a large amount of traffic during rush hour. However, now that the Office Depot corporate building is nearing completion between Yamato Road and Clint Moore road, the traffic volume is expected to increase.
In anticipation, the city has added an extra light right in front of Mizner Court Apartment complex where many Lynn commuter students reside. The office building will expect more than one thousand employees.
Lynn University commuter students will start to notice a new traffic pattern in the upcoming weeks due to the traffic light being placed in front of the Office Depot headquarters building.
Many commuter students that live in nearby communities such as Bocair, Mizner Court and San Marco use this intersection everyday to commute to school.
“I cannot believe the city would put such a large office building in a residential area,” said Max Richards, sophomore. “I use this intersection everyday traveling to and from school and I have a feeling it is going to cause a lot of problems.”
Many students question why such a building is needed when there are so many other empty office buildings that are already available in Boca Raton.
Not only is this going to effect the students and staff of Lynn University, it is going to cause increased traffic for the citizens of Boca Raton and the thousand of visitors the city welcomes each year during the winter months.

As one of three seniors on Lynn’s Men’s Basketball Team, Luke Postorino is ready for his run at the NCAA Tournament.
Postorino, a business major from Clearwater, is entering his third year under Head Coach Scott McMillin. Postorino spent his freshman year at LeMoyne College in Syracuse, N.Y.
“I chose to come back to Florida to play at Lynn because it has such a great basketball program, it’s a beautiful school, and it’s close to home,” Postorino said. “I also have enjoyed all the people I’ve met and the connections I’ve made since I got here. I feel that I’ve learned the pitfalls that some of the seniors prior to me have made. I know what I need to do in order to help our team have success similar to the 2004-2005 team that went to the Final Four.”
“Luke is a great leader and always stays positive even when times are rough,” said Michael Woo, sophomore. “I know I can always look to him for guidance and support.”
Last year, Postorino led the team in minutes played with 928 and minutes per game with 32, after playing in all 29 games and starting 17. In those 29 games, Postorino averaged 6.7 points, 3.1 assists and 1.2 steals per game. He also set a career high. After graduation, Postorino aspires to be a general manager of an NBA team.
Look out for the Men’s Basketball opening game on Nov. 5 against across town rival Florida Atlantic. Regular season starts Nov. 15.
