Halloween is a holiday
celebrated by both adults and children. The
elements of surprise make Halloween fun and
unpredictable.
“I find Halloween so enjoyable because it
gives me the opportunity to dress up and
play different roles outside of the drama
program,” said Brooks Alexander, junior in
the College of International Communication’s
drama program.
More than 93% of children under the age of
twelve will go trick-or-treating on
Halloween. However, recent studies show that
adult participation in Halloween is rising
considerably, especially for college
students. About 50% of adults dress up for
Halloween. Furthermore, 67% take part in
some form of Halloween activity such as
parties, decorating the house and
trick-or-treating with their children.
The U.S. consumer spends upwards of $1.5
billion on Halloween costumes annually.
Almost $2.5 billion is spent annually on
other Halloween items such as decorations
and crafts. Furthermore, about $100,000 of
the money spent on various Halloween items
is made through online purchases.
“I routinely purchase my costumes online,”
said Samantha Bartley, administrative
fellow. “This year I bought a queens guard
costume from 3wishes.com.”
Besides costumes, candy is one of the most
distinguishable traits of this holiday. In
fact, Halloween is the largest
candy-purchasing holiday of the year. One
quarter of all candy sold annually is during
the Halloween season, making it the sweetest
holiday.
“Halloween is my favorite holiday because
you get to dress up and eat a lot of free
candy,” said Junior Beaezier, senior. “This
year I am dressing up as a cop.”

It is time to get
in the spirit of the season with
delicious Halloween cupcakes. These
scrumptious cupcakes are made from
scratch and will keep your mouth
watering for days. However, they can be
made for almost any occasion by
decorating them with different colors of
icing and corresponding accessories.
“Baking and decorating cupcakes is a
great idea,” said Amanda Tomec, senior.
Baking seasonal cupcakes decorated with
Halloween sprinkles and accessories are
a great way to get into the Halloween
spirit. If using vanilla icing, add
orange or black edible color dye to add
a spooky touch.
Things you need:
•1 ½ cups of flour
•1 cup (2 sticks) of softened butter
•2 cups of sugar
•4 eggs
•1 cup of milk
•1 teaspoon vanilla extract
•Cupcake holder
•Cupcake liners
•Electric mixer
•Edible Halloween accessories
•Chocolate or Vanilla icing
Directions:
1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2.Using an electric mixer gradually add
the sugar to the softened butter in a
large mixing bowl.
3.Slowly add the dry ingredients in
three separate parts with the milk and
vanilla added in between each part.
4.Spoon the well-blended batter into the
cupcake liners.
5.Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the
tops are golden
6.Let the cupcakes cool for fifteen
minutes
7.Decorate your cupcakes and enjoy. |

HALLOWEEN NECESSITIES
There are Certain Items Students Can Not

Halloween is one of the
world’s oldest holidays, dating back to
Pagan times. However, today more people than
ever are celebrating Halloween all over the
world. Children and adults can be anything
they want for one night. Halloween is also a
time when friends like to play scary pranks
on each other. Oct. 31 would not be the same
without all the traditions that go along
with it.
Lynn University students were asked what
they could not live without during the
Halloween season:
“I can’t live without candy on Halloween,”
said Shane McFarland, junior. “It’s the
candy holiday of the year.”
“I can’t live without a flashlight,” said
Amanda Heidel, senior. “Halloween is a time
when my friends like to play pranks on me
and I’m really scared of the dark.”
“Halloween wouldn’t be the same without my
creative costumes,” said Amanda Tomec,
senior. “Halloween is a time that I look
forward to not only because of what I’m
going to dress up as, but I am eager to see
what other people’s costumes are.” |

When it is the time for the monsters to
visit, the first thing that strikes the mind
is undoubtedly scary Halloween decorations.
It is the haunted Halloween party décor that
sets the perfect mood and atmosphere for the
celebration of this festivity.
There are a multitude of distinctive spooky
decoration ideas for Halloween. One idea is
to invest in vintage Halloween decorations.
When it comes to decorating the house also
consider the lawn graveyards that are
decorated giving a haunted look.
To create a perfect ambiance, consider the
elements of lighting and background music.
Creating fog and smoke, which can be done by
using dry ice, also serves as a great idea
to add special effects to Halloween
decorations.
“I love seeing how creative people can get
to really make the spooky effect,” said
Shira Blumenthal, sophomore.
Give a feel of autumn, by using dried
flowers, brown leaves and empty branches can
also act as a great theme for Halloween
parties. To create the eerie effect, place
skeletons, fake spiders and bats at
different corners of the house.
“This Halloween my boyfriend and I are
decorating our apartment by putting cobwebs
on our doors, as well as outside. We have
two black cats that we are dressing up. I’m
dressing my cats up as a pumpkin and
wizard,” said Suzie McCombe, sophomore.

Lynn University students will
be dressing in disguise this season with a
variety of different types of costumes.
Students may want to scare someone with
vampire teeth and fake blood, or throw on a
pair of cowboy boots and become Daisy Duke.
I set out to find the best place to buy
Halloween costumes in Boca Raton. I found
three fabulous places right down the street.
The first place I visited, Party City, is
located on Glades Road. It is a great place
to find everything from costumes to wigs.
Party City also has scary decorations for
your house. The store contains a wall of
pictures featuring every costume in the
store. The picture wall made it very
convenient to find exactly what you are
looking for.
The second stop was the Halloween Costume
Superstore, Which is also conveniently
located on Glades Road. The Halloween
Costume Superstore has a large selection of
costumes and accessories at a great price.
Spirit Halloween was my last stop. They have
a large variety of costumes that are all
organized according to theme. It is a great
place for students who are still struggling
to find costume ideas.
There are great costume superstores
throughout Boca Raton. Therefore, there is
no reason not to be dressed up for
Halloween.

Choosing a costume may be one
of the most stressful parts of Halloween.
The key to having the best Halloween costume
is to be original, look good and most
importantly, feel comfortable.
Ladies should consider dressing as a police
officer, nurse, bumble bee, hippy, devil,
angel, sailor, cat, Umpire or French maid.
All of these costumes can be purchased in
different styles. They can also be
accessorized in many different ways.
Guys who plan on going to a costume party
this Halloween should consider dressing as a
baseball player, The Joker, a pimp,
cheerleader, police officer, inmate, priest,
rabbi or even a hot dog. It may be harder
for men to choose an original costume for
Halloween because there are not as many
options.
There are numerous costume ideas for the
couples around campus as well. Couples
costume ideas include bacon and eggs, Plug
and Socket, Peter Pan and Tinkerbelle or
even Dr. Seuss characters such as, Thing 1
and Thing 2.
Halloween costumes can be the best or worst
part of Halloween. It all depends on the
planning. Go out now and browse around to
see what is out in stores. Do not wait until
the day before Halloween to purchase a
costume. On Halloween day all of the
costumes will either be out of stock or the
choices will be limited. Good luck with the
search for the perfect Halloween costume.
Have a safe and stylish Halloween..

WHERE TO GET SPOOKED
Halloween Events in the Local Area
for Every Halloween Fan
|
| |
|
By AMY LYUS
Staff Writer
This Halloween season
students can get in the spirit by enjoying
some of the many events that are happening
around Palm Beach County.
For many students Halloween is a definite
favorite. This year prepare for haunted
houses, costume contests, trick-or-treating
and local fairs with midway rides, food and
fun. There are also events going on around
school that are extremely affordable.
If students are up for a serious scare,
Fright Nights at the South Florida
Fairgrounds will be hosting a spook-tacular
event. Fright Nights will include rides and
many frights. Warning: do not attend if
scared easily.
Couples may want to attend the Jupiter
Outdoor Center where there will be
stargazing and a haunted kayak tour of the
Loxahatchee River. It will be a relaxing
event for couples that still want to
celebrate the Halloween season. After the
ride, visitors can enjoy a campfire and
ghost stories while toasting marshmallows to
make s’mores.
Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach will be
hosting some other Halloween affairs for
students. One of which will be a Halloween
parade that will involve trick-or-treating
down the avenue followed by a costume
parade.
Halloween is a great day for students to get
into the Halloween spirit and attend one of
South Florida’s many scary events.

HALLOWEEN HORROR NIGHTS

Special to the iPulse
Almost 80 Lynn students
visited Orlando and experienced Universal
Studio’s Halloween Horror Nights recently,
planned by the Office of Student
Involvement.
The cost of the trip was $50, and that
included transportation and their ticket to
the park. When the day finally came,
students piled onto two coach buses at 3
p.m. and made the three-hour drive to
Orlando, ready for a fright-filled night.
Universal Hollywood Horror nights is an
event that occurs on certain nights in
October at Universal Studios. Certain areas
of the park are transformed into haunted
houses with elaborate themes. This event has
been going on for 18 years and this year’s
theme was Bloody Mary. The basic idea was
that the popular childhood figure had broken
lose and reeked havoc over the park.
This year’s house’s themes were very unique.
They included Interstellar Terror, the Body
Collectors, Doomsday (based on the popular
movie), Reflections of Fear and Scary Tales:
Once Upon a Nightmare. All together there
were eight houses that students had the
ability to travel through.
In addition to the houses, this year’s event
also featured six “scare zones.” In these
areas, characters walked about the streets,
coming right up to spectators and proceeded
to follow guests around. These were themed
as well. Some of the themes included mixed
up fairytales, the Wicked Witch’s version of
Oz, The Haunted Streets of Jack the Ripper’s
Time and a haunted colonial America. These
new areas were a welcome addition to the
event, adding to the suspense, without the
long lines of the houses.
Overall, the students had a great time on
the trip. In addition to the scary parts,
many of Universal’s classic rides were also
open for the night, allowing a welcome break
from the terror. Students boarded the bus
around 2 a.m., and returned to campus at
5:30 a.m. Sunday morning. They all survived
the wrath of Bloody Mary, and hoped to get
the opportunity to return for next year’s
Hollywood Horror Nights.

BRINGING BACK HALLOWEEN
Classic Halloween Films Prove to Last

“Friday the
13th“ and “The Exorcist“ box covers. |
| |

By RACHEL EVANS
Staff Writer
There are many ways to get
into the Halloween spirit such as dressing
up, having a costume party or going trick or
treating. Renting a scary movie is one
Halloween tradition that will never go out
of style, like so many of the Halloween
classics that are available to rent today.
Movie rental stores bring back scary movies
from the past to evoke the feeling of fear.
The legendary horror films “Friday the 13th”
and The Exorcist” are all back front and
center on the shelves.
“Friday the 13th” is about the series of
unexplainable events that occurred at Camp
Crystal Lake after the drowning of young boy
and the murder of two camp counselors. The
camp was forced to close until the camp
re-opened under new ownership, once again
starting these unexplainable murders.
“The Exorcist” is a classic horror film in
which a little girl named Reagan becomes
possessed by the devil. Her mother in
desperation turns to to two priests to
perform an exorcism to release the devil
from her body. This film will keeps viewers
at the edge of their seat, filled with fear
and powerful imagery that will not soon be
forgotten.
Any of these films prove to be an excellent
choice for a spooky night in. There are also
some Halloween films in theaters now;
including: “Saw V,” the latest installment
in the Saw series that is not for the weak
and the re-release of “Tim Burton’s The
Nightmare Before Christmas” presented now in
Disney Digital 3D.
