Omar J. Herrera hails from Ossining, Westchester County in New York. His interests include acting, dancing, singing and rock climbing and he has a big passion for community service. He trained in the performing arts at Ossining High School Theatre Department, Sleepy Hollow Performing Arts Center, Josie’s International School of Dance, Playgroup Theatre and recently Drama Kids International. Omar is currently enrolled as a freshman at Lynn University in Boca Raton Florida. Herrera is currently enrolled as a freshman at Lynn and will major in both Drama and Media and Politics. Herrera was recently voted the class representative for the class of 2012.
Q:What was your first impression of Lynn University during Freshman Orientation?
A: My first impression of Lynn University during Freshman Orientation was that it was a small school, but seeing all the diversity and flags everywhere, made it great to see that we embrace different cultures, ethnicities and languages. You could tell everyone’s unique and has their own story on how they ended up at Lynn.
Q: When did you know you wanted to run for class representative?
A: I knew that Lynn had a Student Government Association, and I wanted to be part of it. As the weeks progressed I realized many that there were issues that needed to be addressed for the freshmen. Issues such as lack of communication, campus involvement and overall participation. I wanted to address this as it effected me as a student.
Q: Explain the process you went through in class representative elections?
A: I was told that I had to go through a process to get on the ballot. First I had to get 50 signatures on a petition, which was great because I met even more peers. I had to write about why I wanted to be a representative and what qualified me. Once I was officially allowed to campaign, I got a dedicated team that helped me get the word all across campus. We designed fliers with my picture, posters, banners and booths. We also gave away candy, in addition to starting many Facebook fan groups. It was a lot of work but really exciting and interesting, especially at a new school and campus for me.
Q: What do you wish to achieve now that you have this role?
A: I have designed a plan on how this year will go. I have decided to start a freshmen council that would make ideas into realities and address issues and concerns. Later in the process, I would bring it to SGA and Lynn officials. In addition, I have registered a golf cart for the annual golf cart parade to represent the freshmen class. Meetings have been scheduled for discussions and campus topics and published well. I want the freshmen class to get involved and understand their four years here at Lynn. It is not just about going to class but getting involved around campus and giving back.
Q: How do you think you have done so far at Lynn?
A: Personally, I feel I have started off great. I have been working with more experienced people on campus (SGA E-Board) to make sure I am on the right track and doing things the right way. I have been speaking and meeting a lot of freshman and telling them to either attend our meetings or get involved in one of our projects. I think I should get more feedback from my actual classmates and ask them how they really feel thus far at Lynn.
Q: Finally, what do you think this role can give you for future experience?
A: This role is great for future experiences. It teaches me to work with people in groups, teams and organizations. It exposes me to all different types of opinions, viewpoints, attitudes and ideas. I am a theatre and communication/politics major so it is great for me and fits in with my future plans.

Lynn University has its own page on Facebook. Become a fan of the Lynn University Facebook page and gain access to exclusive content including exclusive photos and videos.
The Lynn facebook page can also be used as a networking tool for current and future students as well as alumni. There is a discussion board on the page where students both interested in and attending Lynn can post questions they may have and have them answered by Lynn staff.
The facebook page is updated almost every day so be sure to check it often to view the most up to date content.
Most of the content on the page is student produced. For example, student photographers Mark Falcone, junior, and Carolina Gonzalez, junior, are the main photographers for the events posted on the page. Students also take part in the production of the videos on the page as well. Some of the videos on the page at the moment include the “Founders Day Third Annual Canoe Challenge” and the “Why My School Rocks” video.
In the days ahead new videos will be added such as a “Day in the Life of a Lynn Student-Athlete,” which gives current and future Lynn students an inside look on the daily life of a student-athlete.
Also to be added will be an interview of Lynn Alum, Lisa Gangel, who is working as a sportscaster in Seattle, WA.
In the coming weeks, there will be an introduction to the Big LU Bobblehead. Select Lynn fans who have received a Bobblehead have traveled with and photographed Big LU at different locations. Recently, Big LU traveled to the Windy City of Chicago with Director of Alumni Affairs Matt Roos.
Founders Day photos will be up soon and look out for the groundbreaking ceremony of the new Wold Performing Arts Center.
The Lynn University facebook page can be found by typing Lynn University in the Facebook search bar and selecting pages. Lynn University students will also be able to view the other Facebook pages Lynn has to offer, such as Lynn University Alumni and Lynn University International Students 2008.

Students Are Getting Messy
Food, Festivities and Fun Characterizes a New Tradition for the Lynn Campus

More than 55 students participated in Messy Games recently, hoping to take home the $250 grand prize. The Residence Hall Association (RHA) and the Office of Residence Life sponsored the event.
11 teams competed in eight challenges, including: Twister with ketchup, mustard, relish and chocolate syrup, body painting with ketchup, a spam toss and a few other very messy events.
“Messy games is a new event that united RHA and Residence Life. This event had an amazing turnout that surpassed everyone’s expectation. Messy Games will hopefully become an annual event at Lynn,” said RHA President Tova Brown, sophomore.
Not only did Messy Games make an enjoyable event for all of those who participated, but it was a great community builder. Teammates and other teams congratulated each other at the close of the event, whether it was with a verbal congratulations or with one big messy hug. The spirit of the event will prove to be a great RHA tradition.
Messy Games has been known as an event that takes place at Resident Assistant Training before the fall semester, but because of its success RHA is going to begin a new tradition for the entire campus.
“I’ve competed in Messy Games for two years during RA Training and I was so excited to hear RHA was hosting the event,” said Heather Sears, senior.
Other RHA events this year include Movie on the Wall, Late-Night Study Break and the much anticipated Casino Night.
For more information about Messy Games or RHA all are encouraged to attend meetings every Monday at 7 p.m. which are held in the Knights’ Court Patio.

The Law and Justice Club and Knights in the Community recently worked together to put on a banquet in the Green Center, honoring veterans from the West Palm Beach area. This was the second time this event has been hosted, and it is one of the biggest events of the year for both organizations.
The dinner was attended by about 20 veterans who served in both the Korean War and the War in Iraq. About 20 Lynn students, who were members of both KIC and the Law and Justice club, got the chance to mingle with these American heroes, and learn a lot about their experiences during their time in the army.
Freshman Zachary Welsh said, “It was interesting to hear their stories, especially the embarrassing stories from their time in boot camp. It was cool to hear about all the things they have done for our country.”
During the event, various speeches were made. KIC advisor, Annie Weaver, who welcomed all of the veterans to the event, made the first speech of the night. Next, KIC President Samara Wilchins introduced the guest speaker for the night, Seymour Friedman, PhD. Friedman spoke of his time in the service and how proud he was of the members of his regiment, many of whom attended the banquet as well.
To conclude the night, Law and Justice Club President, Megan Perry, spoke and lead a prayer and a moment of silence in honor of the fallen soldiers.
After weeks of preparation, the event went off without a hitch. The food, provided by Boca Joe’s catering, was a hit with both students and veterans, adding just the right touch to the evening.
“I thought the event went very well, and it felt good to honor the veterans because so many go unnoticed,” said Kristeena Lyon, freshman. That sentiment was shared by all of the students attending the event.
